Rye centenarian awarded Boston Post Cane

RYE — Mary Rizzo has always looked young for her age, said her son Wendell.

Years ago, while volunteering to help local seniors on trips for shopping or medical appointments, she was often mistaken as being younger than those whom she was helping – despite being 10 to 15 years older.

Perhaps her devotion to volunteerism has kept her young at 102. Or perhaps it is her life as a devoted wife, mother of two, grandmother and great-grandmother. In any case, the Rye Board of Selectmen, along with the town’s police and fire chiefs, were pleased to present the Rye Boston Post Cane to Rizzo on Tuesday at Webster at Rye, the senior living facility where she lives.
